Entity Payments is a Discern feature that allows you to assign each entity (or group of entities) to a specific payment method.
How it works
By default, all entities in your account are billed to a single default payment method.
However, with Entity Payments you can:
Add multiple payment methods to your account
Assign different entities to different payment methods
Have entities grouped by payment method for billing purposes
This is particularly useful for customers who set up individual bank account or payment method for different entities, saving time on payment reconciliation.
When mapping entities to different payment methods, Discern creates separate subscriptions for each payment group, though this is handled automatically. All subscriptions remain aligned to the same renewal date.
How can I get it set up?
Navigate to Settings > Payment Methods
Add and verify payment methods - You can add multiple payment methods via Stripe (credit cards or ACH). Each must be verified before use.
Assign entities to payment methods - Once verified, click "+ Select Entities" or "Select entities to bill" via the three dots on the right.
Choose which entities should be charged to that payment method:
Complete billing setup - When you have entities mapped to different payment methods, you'll proceed through a billing screen that shows your entity-to-payment-method mappings
If you're currently onboarding in Discern and are interested in setting up entity payments, we can support that too. When you're onboarding in Discern and land on the billing screen, you'll notice that there's only an option to add one payment method, credit card:
If you'd like to set up multiple payment methods, click on the Discern icon in the top left:
You'll then be brought back to the get started page, where you can click on Settings in the bottom left:
Then, select Payment Methods:
Next, select "+ Add a New Payment Method":
You'll then be able to add a new payment method and give it a nickname or identifier so you're able to associate a specific card with a specific entity:
Then, select the entities associated with that payment method:
Once you've added all payment methods and assigned them to their respective entities, click on the Discern logo in the top left:
Resume the onboarding steps, and when you return back to Billing, you'll see the payment methods per entity subscription:
Once you're fully onboarded in the platform, you can make updates to your payment methods any time by going to Settings > Payment Methods.
