What is my Registered Agent address, and how do I find it?

Written by Leah Nally

A Registered Agent address is the official physical address where a business receives important legal and government documents. Every business entity (such as an LLC, corporation, or PLLC) is required to designate a Registered Agent in each jurisdiction where it is formed or operates.

With Discern, Registered Agent addresses are maintained for each jurisdiction, so we will update this address based on the specific state whenever it is needed.

What is a Registered Agent Address used for?

The registered agent address serves as the official point of contact between a business and the state. It is used to receive time-sensitive and legally significant documents, including:

  • Service of process (lawsuits and legal summons)

  • State compliance notices

  • Tax notifications

  • Annual report reminders and filing correspondence

The examples above are delivered digitally in Discern, but they represent common types of documents that would typically be sent to a Registered Agent address.

What is a Registered Agent Address not used for?

The registered agent address is not permitted to be used as a general business or local address such as a Principal Place of Business or Mailing Address. If this type of address is needed, customers should engage specific providers who offer virtual and/or mailing addresses.

Registered Agent Address by jurisdiction

Every jurisdiction (state) maintains its own registered agent requirement. For example in some states,

  • The address must meet that state’s specific rules (typically a physical address within the state)

  • People must be physically present present at the address to receive legal service of process.

Some businesses use a commercial registered agent service like Discern to handle this requirements across multiple states.

How to find your Registered Agent Address in Discern

You can easily locate this information within the platform:

  1. Navigate to the registration record for the business

  2. Click into the details section (selected by default)

  3. Look for the field labeled “Registered Agent Address”

This section will display the official registered agent address associated with that specific jurisdiction.

Please note, that this is different from your business addresses (Principal Place of Business/Mailing Address) used for general purposes, like with the IRS, Bank accounts, Insurance policies etc. To navigate to these addresses navigate to the "Addresses" tab within the entity registration view. The can be updated here, or on your next filing task.
